Crossing Attitudes Bible Study

I’m always in awe of how the truth of God’s Word can dramatically change a life. As I taught through First & Second Peter, the Lord reminded me again how important truth is to the daily lives of individuals. During Second Peter, we looked at several unbiblical teachings of our day that thousands, even millions, of people follow. Some of these teachings are entrenched in Christian churches. It saddens me because I’ve seen firsthand how false teaching leads to wrong thinking which leads to discouragement and bondage. As I began to pray about what to teach next, I felt an urgency from the Holy Spirit to teach the truths that I’ve seen change numerous lives through many years of biblical counseling.

This Bible study explores how God’s Word should affect our daily attitudes including depression, anxiety, anger, habitual sins, and more, with the cross of Jesus Christ as the centerpiece. My heart for this topical study is that it will accomplish dual purposes. The first is to help those who struggle with troubling thoughts and behaviors. Since all of us have struggled (and will struggle again) with negative emotions and wrong actions, we can all be helped by the freedom found in Christ. Our struggles also help us sympathize with each other!

The second purpose is to equip us to minister to the hurting using the truths of God's Word alone. We may not be counselors but every Christian is called to minister to broken spirits, whether it is a family member, a co-worker, a friend, or a neighbor. It is vital that we lovingly minister truth to them, avoiding the empty chatter of the world. During the course of the study, we will unravel many popular myths of psychology that are prevalent in today's culture. We will see that these myths have no biblical basis and are actually in opposition to what the Word teaches. Often, these myths leave people confused and in despair. The Word of God is totally sufficient to meet our emotional needs. The Bible is living and powerful. The apostle Peter said it well in 2 Peter 1:2-3, "Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness."

Christians know intellectually that Christ died on the cross for their sins. Many Christians, however, look at their lives and wonder why the love, joy, and peace promised in the Scriptures are missing from their lives. They often don’t comprehend how Christ’s life, death, and resurrection should affect their daily lives. What happened on the cross over 2000 years ago should influence our emotions, actions, relationships, and mind-set about the ups and downs of life. In other words, the cross should transform our attitudes. "For the message of the cross … is the power of God" (1 Corinthians 1:18).

I pray that as you participate in this Bible study, you will be humbled by His amazing sacrifice, strengthened by His incredible love, and encouraged to rest in His unique plan for your life.

In His Grace and Peace,

Linda Pringle
